Photoreceptive E.coli bacteria, printed images
2026
Created with the Biodesign Challenge Outstanding Art Prize mentorship with BioBAT Art Space.
Living Records explores the responsibilities of image culture in shaping collective memory through developing and encoding living images with photoresponsive E. coli. Through bacterial photography, the project responds to the subjugation of public sociocultural power in who gets to be remembered in history and who gets to understand the technology that stores our memories. New pathways for agency and responsibility in the development of human legacy and culture emerge through these ephemeral documents that call for our care.

Photographed by Liam Davis and Whitney Browne.
